iMagine has been highlighted in a feature article by Horizon Magazine, titled “AI dives into a sea of data, from plankton to pollution.” Written by journalist Tom Cassauwers, the story spotlights how artificial intelligence solutions developed within iMagine are helping scientists analyze massive volumes of aquatic data at unprecedented speed.
The article showcases real-world use cases driven by the project’s open-access AI services. Jean-Olivier Irisson, Sorbonne University, explained how iMagine’s AI tools allow researchers to classify 2.2 million microscopic plankton images in days, a task that previously took months or years. Plankton generate half of the world's oxygen and form the base of the marine food web, making rapid monitoring vital for climate science.
By making training datasets and AI applications freely accessible, iMagine continues to support European research initiatives such as the EU Mission: Restore our Ocean and Waters, the European Digital Twin of the Ocean, and EU OceanEye.
